Final Stats
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team gave the Southland Conference's top team a run for its money on Saturday. However, after winning the first two matches to open singles competition, the Colonels fell to victim to a Northwestern State rally en route to a 5-2 loss.
The Demons stayed undefeated in Southland Conference play, improving to 9-0, and remaining in first place in the league. Meanwhile, the Colonels fell to 10-8 on the year.
Nicholls started strong as Florina Nosca notched a hard-fought matchup against Northwestern State's Olga Bazhanova. In a matchup with one of the best No. 1's in the league, Nosca came out on top, and survived a second half rally, by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Natalia Zamora followed by winning her matchup against Adna Curokovic. Zamora earned a tough 6-4 win in the opening set before rolling to victory with a 6-1 second set win.
Unfortunately, the Demons' depth proved too much to overcome on Saturday. Northwestern State got on the board as Kathrin Lange picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nicholls' Tatiana Denezhhkina.
Sumana Kalyanasundaram forced the first set into tiebreakers against Andrea Nedorostova before falling to the Demons' No. 4 by scores of 7-5, 6-3.
The most hotly contested matchup of the day may have been the No. 5 matchup as Nicholls' Sanja Stanojcic went into tiebreakers against Bianca Schultz of Northwestern State, before eventually falling by scores of 6-7 (5), 6-1, (11-9).
A 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 6 match gave Northwestern State a 4-2 lead heading into doubles.
The Colonels once again gave the Demons a run for their money as Nosca-Zamora nearly pulled off an upset of Curokovic-Bazhanova before falling 8-6.
After falling in the No. 2 doubles match 8-1, Nicholls once again dropped a nailbiter in the third and final doubles match of the afternoon. Unfortunately, for the Colonels, Stanojcic-Kalyanasundaram fell 8-6 to Lange-Schultz to wrap up the day.
The Colonels will return to action on April 6 when they host Southern at the Colonel tennis complex. Nicholls will be looking for its seventh win in nine outings when they host the Jaguars for a 2 p.m. first serve.
