BATON ROUGE, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team pumped out a season's best 16 hits en route to a 9-2 victory over Southern at Lady Jaguar Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Colonels (19-9) put a total of eight runs on the scoreboard over the first two innings to take an 8-0 lead that the Lady Jaguars (8-23) never recovered from.

Nicholls started the first inning scoring with a three RBI double to centerfield by senior Natalie Travasos to take a 3-0 lead with only one out. Travasos scored later in inning via a RBI ground out by senior Lacey Gros.

After a scoreless frame for Southern, Nicholls went back to work in the top of the second as the team put forth another four runs. The first two runs in the inning came courtesy of a sophomore Kayla Watterson double to leftfield that plated seniors Audrey Wood and Lyndsay Mesh.

True freshman Ashton Bennett drove in another via a RBI single, and the final run in the inning came on a passed ball that brought home Travasos.

Nicholls extended its lead to 9-0 via a RBI single by sophomore Megan Gaspard in the fifth, and Southern responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half to crack the scoreboard. However, that is as close as the team would come at a comeback bid.

Getting the win for the Colonels in the circle was Gros, improving to 10-3 on the season. Gros fanned eight in the loss as well, while only allowing three hits.

Leading the Colonels at the plate was Mesh with a perfect 4-for-4 showing, while Travasos racked up the most RBI in the win by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI. Wood, Watterson and Gaspard also recorded multiple hits.

Also, getting her first collegiate hits was redshirt freshman Brittany Ezell as she went 2-for-2 with a RBI. Her two hits were both doubles.

Nicholls will be back in action this weekend at Texas State when two of the Southland's top three teams square off in a pivotal conference series.
