Box Score

NEW ORLEANS - The Colonels jumped out to an early lead by scoring twice in the top of the first, but the Privateers struck back to the tune of eight runs on 11 hits as the Nicholls State University baseball team (22-25) fell to the University of New Orleans (12-34) 8-4 in the Colonels' 2010 non-conference finale.

Senior outfielders Keith Kulbeth and Adam Miley drilled back-to-back doubles and redshirt sophomore first baseman Beau Faulk followed with an RBI single up the middle to stake Nicholls to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

However, UNO struck back in the bottom of the first as Jared Comarda drove in two with a one-out single to tie it at 2-2. The Privateers kept their foot on the gas, adding one more each in the second and fourth followed by two more in the sixth and seventh.

The UNO lineup was led by Ryan Eden (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI), Craig Schnell (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, R) and Clint Ourso (2-for-3, 2 R). Meanwhile, Privateer starter Andrew Richardson limited Nicholls to two runs on four hits over 5.0 IP.

After allowing two in the top of the first, Richardson kept Nicholls off the board for the remainder of his outing. The Colonels tried to rally in the top of the seventh as a walk, a hit batsmen and three wild pitches led to a pair of runs.

However, Privateer relievers Kevin DeGrouttola and Randy Verdin combined to shut the Colonels out over the final two frames.

With the 2010 non-conference season over, the Colonels will return to Thibodaux on Friday to host their final homestand of the season. Nicholls returns to Southland Conference action by hosting a three-game set against defending regular season conference champion Texas State.
