SAN ANTONIO - The Colonels found themselves in a back and forth battle with the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners on Friday night, but a five-run UTSA seventh put the Roadrunners out in front for good as the Nicholls State University baseball team (22-22, 11-14 Southland Conference) fell in the opener of a three-game Southland Conference series by a final of 10-6.
Nicholls was led by junior center fielder/leadoff man Bear Comer (2-for-3, 2 R) and junior right fielder Adam Miley (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) as the Colonels compiled 12 hits. However, the Roadrunners added to their conference leading team home run total with a pair of long balls among their 17 hits.
The Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but, in what would become a theme on the night, UTSA answered with a pair in the bottom of the third.
An RBI single by Keith Kulbeth in the top of the fourth put Nicholls up 3-2, but UTSA claimed its first lead of the night in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice and an RBI single that put UTSA up 4-3.
The Colonels tied it up in the fifth as Chase Jaramillo scored on Stephen Gauthe's bunt single to make it 4-4. However, after both teams traded zeroes in the sixth, the Roadrunners sent 11 men to the plate to score five runs. Due to a Colonel error, only two were earned, but the damage was done as UTSA went up 9-4.
Miley launched his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the eighth to pull the Colonels to within three at 9-6. However, the Roadrunners tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
The Colonels will try to even the series on Saturday.
