Box Score
SAN ANTONIO - Senior right hander Tyler Minto allowed just one earned run while tying his season high by striking out eight batters in 9.0 innings, but the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners scored in the bottom of the ninth to tie things up and send the game to extra innings, before plating an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th to hand the Nicholls State University baseball team (22-23, 11-15 Southland Conference) a 3-2 loss on Saturday.
Nicholls jumped out to an early lead as junior center fielder Bear Comer led off the game with a double and came around to score two batters later on Adam Miley's sacrifice fly to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
However, The Roadrunners tied things up in the bottom of the second as Ryan Rummel doubled and came home to score an unearned run on an error to make it 1-1 after two.
The Colonels reclaimed the lead in the fourth as Brady Bourque singled with one out and Blake Bergeron followed two batters later with an RBI double to make it 2-1.
From there, both starting pitchers took over as Minto and UTSA's Ryan Proudfoot each turned in impressive outings the rest of the way.
Minto kept the Roadrunners off the board from the third through the eighth innings. The Mobile, Ala. native allowed just one hit and did not allow a runner to reach second base over the stretch.
Unfortunately, for the Colonels, Proudfoot settled in as well. The UTSA starter went 10.0 IP and limited Nicholls to seven hits. After Bergeron's fourth inning RBI double, the Colonels managed just a pair of singles and a walk the rest of the way.
The Colonels took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth, and Minto came out looking for his third complete game of the season. However, Nicholls ran into trouble as Lance Brown led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Rummel followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game and send it to extras.
After trading zeroes in the tenth, Nicholls threatened in the top of the 11th as Comer drew a lead off walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt. However, UTSA reliever Kevin Clarke retired the next two batters to escape the jam.
The Roadrunners capitalized in the bottom half of the 11th as Rummel led off with a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt. After pinch hitter Jason Mohn flew out to left field for the second out, Roadrunner catcher Jeff Taliaferro beat out a grounder to third and Bourque's throw went wide of first to allow Rummel to come home from second with the winning run.
Nicholls will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday when they face the Roadrunners in the finale of the three-game sweep. Firts pitch is set for 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
