SAN ANTONIO - The Nicholls State University baseball team (22-24, 11-16 Southland Conference) threatened on multiple occasions on Sunday, but Texas-San Antonio (17-27, 9-19 Southland) starter Taylor Watson escaped several jams en route to a complete game effort to hand the Colonels a 6-1 loss in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Nicholls senior lefty Jarret Dunnam got the start on Sunday and fell victim to pair of big innings as UTSA jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run second and a three-run fourth to go up 5-0 after four.

The Colonels tried to rally and threatened by putting multiple runners on base in three of the first four innings and five of nine innings. However, Watson was helped by his defense as a double play ball and three fielders' choice putouts squashed potentially big innings for the Colonels.

Junior leadoff man/center fielder Bear Comer drew a lead off walk to start the game, but a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, a fielder's choice and a groundout quickly erased the Colonels in the first.

In the second, Brady Bourque led off with a base hit, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chase Jaramillo. Blake Bergeron followed with the first of his two hits on the day to put runners at first and second, but Jaramillo was thrown out attempting a steal of third and Kevin Schlegel grounded out to end the inning.

Senior right fielder Adam Miley led off the fourth with a base hit and advanced to second as Beau Faulk reached on an error. However, a double play ball off Bourque's bat and a line drive to the first baseman from Jaramillo erased that threat with Miley at third.

Keith Kulbeth led off the sixth with a base hit, but Miley grounded into a fielder's choice and Watson retired the next two batters to keep his shutout bid in tact through the first 6.0 IP.

Nicholls finally managed to break through in the top of the seventh as Bergeron drilled a one-out single to left center, took second on a Cody Dufrene groundout and came home to score on a throwing error by Roadrunner shortstop Lance Brown.

However, that would be all the Colonels could muster against Watson as the UTSA starter retired the final seven batters he faced for the 6-1 win.
