HUNTSVILLE, Texas -
The Nicholls State University softball team lost its season finale 4-0 to Sam Houston State on Sunday, but managed to secure the final seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The berth into the conference tournament marks the fourth time in the lat five seasons that the Colonels have made it to the postseason.
Nicholls (25-20, 16-14 Southland) finished sixth in the overall league standings, while Sam Houston State (21-28, 13-16 Southland) wrapped up its season in ninth.
Sunday's contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Bearkats scored three runs. Of the runs, two came off the bat of Morgan Mikulin when she recorded a two RBI single, while the last and final run of the inning on a RBI single by Amanda Lindsey to give the club the 3-0 advantage.
Nicholls failed to respond in the top of the fourth, however Sam Houston State added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth via a Colonel error that plated Tiffani Woodrum.
The Colonels failed to score a run in the game to fall in the shutout. In the loss, Nicholls left a runner on base in every inning except one.
Junior Carlee Winkelmann took the loss for the Colonels, falling to 6-5 with the decision. Winkelmann gave up four runs - three earned - on 10 hits. Mikulin got the win, improving to 15-19 with the shutout.
Nicholls will take part in the Southland Conference Tournament, squaring off against No. 3 UT-Arlington on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The tournament will be held at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
