Nicholls will square off against TAMU-CC at the Colonel Softball Complex
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University softball team is set to host Southland's first place team, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, for a weekend series at the Colonel Softball Complex. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. with Sunday's matchup set for noon.
Nicholls (7-14, 1-4 SLC) was on the wrong end of a three-game sweep last weekend against McNeese State, which pushed the Colonels losing streak to four games. The Colonels were unable to get the bats going versus the Cowgirls, scoring just four runs on fifteen hits on the weekend.
The pitching staff had a solid outing in Lake Charles, but 11 Colonel errors would lead to 19 unearned runs.
Ashton Bennett continues to head the Colonels with four wins and a 2.60 ERA.
On offense,
Ashley Ray, a junior transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette, tallied four hits last weekend to bump her average to .342 which ranks ninth in the conference.
Mandy Granger also had a good series at the plate by recording a hit in all three games.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (24-6, 8-1 SLC) comes into the series winners of six straight and 19 of its last 20. The Islanders feature Southland's top offense as they lead the conference in batting average (.317) and runs scored (167). Hannah Schwarz currently ranks third in the Southland Conference in batting average (.413) while Kacie Smith is hitting .341 with a conference-best 27 RBIs.
In the circle, the Islanders sport three pitchers with sub-three ERAs. Vianca Pesina leads the squad with a 2.00 ERA while Greta Cecchetti has posted 10 wins on the year.
