The Colonels fell 3-1 on Sunday against 1st place Corpus-Christi

THIBODAUX – After a slugfest on Saturday which saw the Nicholls State University softball team earn a split in its doubleheader against first-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Colonels came up short in a pitcher's duel in the series finale on Sunday as Nicholls fell 3-1 to the Islanders at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (26-7, 10-2 SLC) jumped out to an early lead in the first with a two-run double. For the Colonels (8-16, 2-6 SLC),
Katie Holmes continued swinging a hot bat as she cut the deficit in half with a RBI double in the fourth. The Islanders tacked on one final run in the sixth before taking the game 3-1 to win the three-game series.
Nicholls (8-16, 2-6 SLC) was held to five hits in the loss as Islander starter Jordan Trujillo bounced back from a rough outing on Saturday to pick up her 11th win of the season. She struck out eight Colonels in the game while surrendering one unearned run.
Katie Moulder (2-5) also had a solid day in the circle, scattering eight hits in six innings, giving up three earned with four strikeouts.
Ashton Bennett threw an inning of relief, giving up a hit while fanning one.
Holmes finished the day with two hits, pushing her batting average for the weekend to .556 with seven RBIs.
Ashley Ray, Lauren Batiz and
Mandy Granger accounted for the Colonels' other three hits.
