ARLINGTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team was held to six hits on the day as the University of Texas-Arlington swept Saturday's doubleheader, 4-1 and 4-0, in Southland Conference play at Allan Saxe Field.
Nicholls (8-19, 2-8 SLC) will wrap up the three-game series against UT-Arlington (22-12, 9-2 SLC) on Sunday at 12 p.m.
In game one, UT-Arlington's Callie Collins tossed a complete game, holding Nicholls to one run while striking out 10 batters, and the Mavs offense scored four on eight hits to take the matchup 4-1.
The Colonels'
Katie Holmes drove in
Whitney Roan, who reached on a single, in the fifth on an RBI double for Nicholls' lone run.
Tori Lay recorded the other hit for Nicholls.
Ashton Bennett (5-8) picked up her seventh complete game of the season, throwing six innings while striking out a season-high six batters. She gave up three earned runs in the loss.
For the second contest,
Megan Gaspard led the game off with a single but the Colonels would get only two hits the rest the way as UT-Arlington completed the twin-bill sweep with a 4-0 victory.
Holmes and
Alaina Guidry had leadoff singles for the Colonels in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Holmes also reached base on a walk.
Carlee Winklemann fell to 1-6, striking out four in six innings of work. The senior surrendered four runs on six hits.
The Colonels will look to snap a five-game skid on Sunday in the series finale against the Mavs. First pitch is slated for noon.
