THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University softball team was unable to halt its season long losing streak as Texas State took Sunday's series finale, 6-3, to sweep the three-game weekend set on Sunday at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Nicholls (9-28, 2-15 SLC) plated all three runs in the third inning which erased a 4-0 deficit, but Texas State (24-18, 17-7 SLC) would score a pair of two-out runs in its next at-bat to go up 6-3. Nicholls put runners on in each of the next three innings which included two in the seventh; however, Texas State kept the Colonels off the board as TSU handed Nicholls its eighth consecutive loss.
Leadoff hitter
Megan Gaspard finished 3-for-4 on the day, pushing her hitting streak to 11 games. The junior from Coteau, La., also stole a base and scored on
Ashley Ray's two-run single in the third.
Mandy Granger had two doubles and an RBI while
Whitney Roan added a single.
Katie Moulder pitched 3.2 innings for the Colonels, giving up four earned runs on eight hits.
Ashton Bennett had an impressive showing out of the bullpen, retiring her first seven batters before giving up two singles in the seventh. She finished with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
The Colonels have struggled with errors and also giving up two-out runs all season, and Texas State took advantage of both issues in the second to score three runs. With the bases loaded, Chandler Hall delivered a two-run single and an error allowed the runner on first to come around to score.
After another error in the third made it 4-0, the Colonels struck for four hits off Texas State's Anne Marie Taylor to cut the lead to 4-3. Ray drove in a pair on a single to right center, and Granger followed up with her first double of the season to cut the lead to one.
In the fourth, Nicholls' defensive and two-out woes struck again as the Bobcats added two insurance runs. TSU scored its first run on a throwing error and McKenzie Baack made it 6-3 with an RBI single.
With two down in the seventh, Nicholls got a single by Gaspard and a walk from
Lauren Jolivette, but Crystal Alaniz forced a pop out to second to end the game.
Texas State was led by Hall, Haley Lemons, Baack and Jenna Emery with two hits apiece. Taylor picked up her 12th win of the season, going 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts.
Nicholls returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at No. 18 Louisiana-Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
