Katie Moulder struck out a career-best six batters last weekend
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University softball team will wrap up its 2011 home slate with seven straight games at the Colonel Softball Complex, beginning Tuesday evening with a Southland Conference doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
Nicholls (9-33, 2-18 SLC) is scheduled for three games against SLU (19-23, 9-12 SLC) with a single game on Wednesday, a make-up contest on Thursday against Southern University, and the Colonels finish the homestand this weekend with a three-game set versus Northwestern State University.
The Colonels are still searching for their first win of the month and will be looking to snap their overall and conference skids, both currently at 13 games. Nicholls had the University of Texas at San Antonio on the ropes twice over the weekend, but the Roadrunners rallied to pick up a pair of one-run walk-off victories.
As for much of the season, the junior duo of
Megan Gaspard and
Ashley Ray paced the Colonel offense in its five contests. Gaspard came into the week with an 11-game hitting streak, and after going hitless in her first game; she responded with seven hits in the next four outings while scoring five runs. Meanwhile, Ray drove in eight of the Colonels' 14 runs for the week, hitting three home runs to climb into a first place tie for the SLC lead at 11. She also ranks third in conference with 36 RBIs. Freshman
Brittany Marcet also had a nice week at the plate, hitting .353 with six hits, a homer and two RBIs.
Although going winless, all three Colonel pitchers had solid outings over the weekend. Sophomore
Ashton Bennett, who leads the team with five wins, threw 5.1 innings out of the bullpen on Saturday, giving up one earned run with four strikeouts. Also on Saturday, freshman
Katie Moulder held UTSA to five hits and two runs through her first six innings and finished with a career-high six strikeouts. In Sunday's game, senior Carlee Winklemann tossed four innings in relief, surrendering one earned run with two punchouts.
The Lady Lions come into the matchup after taking two of three in their home conference series against Stephen F. Austin last weekend. SLU has a 2-13 record away from North Oak Park and will be trying for its second road-win in conference.
While SLU has a .234 team batting average, the Lady Lions feature the SLC's second best hitter in Kelsey Nichols (.380). Nichols leads the team with 11 multi-game hits and has 14 RBIs on the season.
In the circle, the Lady Lions (4.45) rank right behind Nicholls (4.41) in ERA and are led by Jessie Browne and Kenna Terry with six wins each. Terry was named SLC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after going 2-0 over the weekend with a 1.50 ERA.
