Megan Gaspard was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Colonel offense on Sunday

CONWAY, Ark. – Megan Gaspard was a perfect 3-for-3 and the Nicholls State University softball team held a 2-0 lead after 5.5 innings, however; the University of Central Arkansas scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and UCA would hold on for a 4-2 victory on Sunday at Farris Field to complete the series sweep.
Nicholls (9-23, 2-12 SLC) was lined up for its first conference road-win of the season, using an RBI single by
Whitney Roan in the fourth and
Kat Angeles' second homer of the week, a solo shot in the sixth, to go up 2-0.
Ashton Bennett (5-11) shutout UCA through the first five innings, but the defense once again doomed the Colonels in the sixth.
After a leadoff error, UCA (17-20, 7-8 SLC) evened up the score with a two-run double. The Bears took advantage of another Colonel miscue en route to the four-run inning as they took a 4-2 lead. In Nicholls' final at-bat, Kelsie Armstrong retired the Colonels in order to earn the series sweep.
Gaspard capped off her weekend with a three-hit performance to finish 6-for-9 (.667) in the three-game set. The junior also tied
Brittany Marcet for the team's longest hitting streak of the season at six games.
Mandy Granger and
Tori Lay added singles but the Colonels were outhit 8-7 in the loss.
Bennett tossed six innings for the complete game, giving up three earned runs while striking out five. Her counterpart, Armstrong, followed up her solid outing on Saturday with a 10-strikeout day.
Nicholls will return to action on Wednesday when they head to Tiger Park in Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers for the third and final time this season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
