BATON ROUGE – The Nicholls State University softball team squared off against the Louisiana State University Tigers on Wednesday night at Tiger Park, and once again LSU proved to be too strong as the Tigers took the contest 8-0 by mercy-rule in five innings.
A four-run second inning gave LSU (22-12) an early 5-0 lead, then the Tigers would tack on one run in each of the next three innings which included a walk-off fielder's choice in the fifth, giving LSU the season sweep over the Colonels.
Nicholls (9-24) finished the game with four hits, led by
Whitney Roan who was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.
Tori Lay added a single while
Megan Gaspard led off the game with a base hit, extending her hitting streak to seven games. The Colonels put two runners on in the opening frame with no outs but LSU retired the next three batters to keep Nicholls off the board.
Carlee Winklemann (2-8) threw all four innings for the Colonels, giving up eight runs on 11 hits. For the Tigers, Rachele Fico (8-8) earned the win, going four innings with four strikeouts. Brittany Mack threw a hitless inning of relief with two strikeouts.
LSU was led on offense by Juliana Santos and Ashley Langoni with two RBIs each.
The Colonels will have the weekend off before returning home to take on Southern Miss on April 13. The Golden Eagles defeated Nicholls earlier this season, 9-1, at the Southern Miss Invitational. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is schedule for 6 p.m.
