THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University men's and women's tennis teams hosted William Carey on Tuesday and both squads came away with victories. The men took their match 4-1, while the women claimed a 4-0 shutout.

For the second straight match, the men's team swept doubles play to jump out to a 1-0 lead. In singles, Damjan Despotovski (No. 1), Dmitry Kozionov (No. 2) and Roy Knight (No. 4) all earned wins for the Colonels (3-2) against William Carey, who is ranked 12th in the NAIA. Shayann Vaezzadeh fell in the No. 3 match and the final two were unfinished.

The women (2-2) also had little trouble in doubles action, winning as three matches, including an 8-0 victory by Parija Maloo and Janna Leeuwerik in the top flight.

Leading 1-0, Nicholls made quick work of singles matchups, winning three matches in straight sets. Maloo improved to 4-0 at the No. 1 position, while Leeuwerik and Marie Aubert picked up the other two points. The final three bouts went unfinished.

The men return to action on Thursday at Southern Miss. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. The women's team will be off until Feb. 28 when they head to UT Arlington.
