Ashley Bertot led Nicholls with three hits on Sunday at UTA
Game One
Game Two
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team's postseason hopes came to an end on Sunday as the Colonels were swept in their doubleheader against UT Arlington, 2-0 and 2-1, at Allan Saxe Field.
Nicholls (13-30, 7-11) needed at least a split in the makeup series at UTA (15-25, 5-13) to remain two games out of sixth place, but could only muster one run on 10 hits.
The Colonels will wrap up the regular season with a two-game home series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christ, starting on Friday, May 4, at 6 p.m.
Game One: UTA 2, Nicholls 0
The Colonels were held to five hits and were shutout for sixth time in conference play as Nicholls dropped the opening game against UTA, 2-0.
The Mavericks were held to five hits as well, but one was a solo homer off
Katie Moulder (6-15) in the second inning. UTA added a run in the third and it proved to be enough run support as UTA blanked the Colonels in game one.
Moulder's bad luck in Southland play continued with the Colonels being shutout for the fifth time when the sophomore has started in the circle. She tossed all six innings for Nicholls, fanning four on the day.
Kat Angels led the offense with two of the Colonels' five hits.
Game Two: UTA 2, Nicholls 1
Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, UTA used three hits including a pair of doubles to take the lead and went on to sweep the Colonels with a 2-1 victory.
Freshman
Rachael Hugghins (0-4) was in line for her first career win, holding the Mavericks to two hits before the sixth inning. Hugghins finished the game for the Colonels, giving up five hits with one strikeout.
Nicholls had five hits in the game, receiving two each from
Ashley Bertot and
Alaina Guidry.
Megan Gaspard drove in the game's first run, plating Guidry in the third on an infield single.
After giving up a hit in the third, Hugghins retired the next 11 Mavericks before UTA's two-out rally in the sixth. In the Colonels' final at-bat,
Rachel Moore led off the inning with a walk but was left stranded on third after
Brittany Ezell struck out to end the game.
