Gold Standard: Colonels Claim Two Titles On Saturday At Conference Meet

NORMAN, Okla. – Nicholls State University sophomore sprinter Kryshell Rolle and junior distance runner Jackie White made history on Saturday, becoming the first-ever Nicholls women's athletes to earn gold in an individual event at the conference meet in program history in winning the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run on Saturday at the 2013 Southland Conference Indoor Championships.

Nicholls ended the meet with 37 overall points, good enough to finish in eighth place as Stephen F. Austin won the overall title with 173.

White had arguably one of the best performances at the conference meet for any Nicholls athlete since 2011, as the junior from Spring Hill, Fla., captured both a gold and silver medal on the day. White began the second day running in the 12-participant mile run finals, where she came away with a school-record second place finish in five minutes, 2.50 seconds earning second team all-conference honors. But the thrill of the final race was even greater as White edged out ORU's Marissa Thomas by just .03 seconds to win the 800-meter title in two minutes, 16.41 seconds. White now has four all-conference performances to her credit in her career, becoming the first Colonel to earn three all-conference honors in the same indoor season.

Coming in with the fastest time in the hurdles, Rolle cruised to the top overall time after last night's preliminaries setting her up for a chance at glory on Saturday. Making the top flight for the two-heat final, Rolle ran a blazing, school-record 8.70-second race in the final heat to claim gold by just .06 seconds. The sophomore sprinter finished ninth in the same event last season, as she was able to make her return to the Mosier Indoor Complex and leave with a title and first team all-Southland honors.

White ended the meet as the second overall individual point earner on the weekend with 20 total points after her first place finish in the 800, second in the mile and DMR from Friday. Rolle finished 13th with 12.25 points, as the two combined for 30.25 of Nicholls 37 total points during the championships.
