Colonels Track Opens Busy Weekend With Strong Performances At Lion Invitational

The Nicholls State University women's track and field team began a hectic weekend with the first of back-to-back meets on Friday at the Lion Invitational, coming away with one gold medal and 10 top ten finishes on the day in Hammond.

Jackie White was the only Colonel to earn first place on the day, earning the top spot in the 800-meter run with her time of 2 minutes, 11.98 seconds. Tessni Carruthers finished second with her time of 2:13.05 earning a new personal record, improving her fourth place standing all-time in the event at Nicholls.

Although her streak of individual titles came to an end on Friday, reigning Southland field athlete of the week Jaimee Springer still has not finished lower than first or second in any meet this season earning silver with her best toss of 145 feet, 7 inches. Springer finished second by less than two feet, with Aja Scott claiming fifth with her throw of 128-08.

Kryshell Rolle finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 14.32 seconds in her only race of the day, while Sarah Pressley cut close to 16 seconds off her personal record time in the 3000-meter run with her third place finish in 10:54.88 to move into fifth all-time at Nicholls.

Starting to show some moxie as well in the field events in the last few weeks has been Amalechi Eweni. Eweni set new personal bests in the triple jump and long jump, with jumps spanning 36 feet, 2.25 inches and 15 feet, 5.50 inches, respectively. Eweni finished seventh in the triple jump, while teammate Cymone Hamilton finished tenth in the shot put with a toss of 37 feet, 9.25 inches.

Emily Charlesworth finished seventh in the 1500-meters with a time of 5:08.85, while Ashley Johnson finished eighth overall in the 400-meter dash, reaching the finish in 59.02 seconds.

Nicholls will now send a select number of athletes to the LSU Alumni Gold meet, beginning Saturday morning at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge.
