2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship Results
LAKE CHARLES, La. – On the final day of the 2013 Southland Conference Championships, the Nicholls State University women's track and field team capped the season with another strong meet and earned two more individual titles from
Tessni Carruthers and
Kryshell Rolle and four more all-conference honorees to close out the 2012-13 outdoor season at the Cameron Communications Track Complex in Lake Charles.
The Colonels finished eighth overall in the team standings, earning 50 total team points over the three-day event, as Stephen F. Austin swept both the men's and women's titles to hold both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. Nicholls tied its best-ever individual performances from 2011, finishing with three event champions and five all-conference award winners to cap one of the best outdoor seasons in team history.
After finishing 1-2 to qualify for the finals of the 800-meter run yesterday, it was a sign of things to come for Sunday as Carruthers put together her strongest run of the season to win with 1500-meter title in a school-record 4 minutes, 31.82 seconds in first with White finishing second in 4:32.92 to earn 18 team points in that event alone.
White followed up her run in the 1500 event with her second silver medal of the meet, finishing second in the 800-meter run in 2:12.37, with Carruthers placing eighth with a time of 2:18.21, earning a combined nine team points for the Colonels. On the weekend, the running duo earned 27 of Nicholls' 50 points by themselves as Carruthers earned first-team All-Southland honors with her win, while White's two silver's earn her second-team All-Southland recognition.
Rolle began her day at the championships with the second-fastest time heading into the championship final, and she did one better by earning the title in a Nicholls-best 13.85 seconds to claim gold in the 100-meter hurdles event. Rolle then competed in the 400-meter hurdles finals and finished eighth in 1:02.91 and earned 11 total points on the day to go along with her first team All-Southland honors.
Sarah Pressley took on the 5K event on Sunday and finished 12th overall, crossing the tape in 19:08.26, which is now the sixth fastest time in school history. The women's 4x4 team of Rolle,
Victoria Williams,
Ashley Johnson and White earned the final points of the meet for Nicholls by finishing first in their section of the race, finishing in 3:51.55 earning two points.
