Colonel Throwers Set For NCAA East Prelims This Week

THIBODAUX, La. – Hoping to close out an extraordinary outdoor season on a strong note, Nicholls State University javelin throwers Aja Scott and Jaimee Springer will head to Greensboro, N.C., for the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Meet at North Carolina A&T University beginning this Thursday and running through Saturday.

Technically considered the first round of competition, the top 48 declared athletes and 24 relay teams in the nation are split into East and West designations and will compete for the chance to make the national championships at the University of Oregon in June, with the top 12 finishers and relay teams in each event automatically qualifying for the championships.

Scott and Springer are the only two Nicholls athletes that have multiple regional appearances under their belt on the squad, with this year making it a combined seven regional competitions to their credit. Scott has made the regionals in the javelin in every season during her career at Nicholls, while Springer will be making her third consecutive appearance.

The women's javelin completion is set to begin on the final day of competition in North Carolina, beginning at noon on Saturday.

Springer, the junior from Lloydminster, Alberta is the reigning Southland Conference champion in the Javelin after winning the first league title of her career at the conference meet in Lake Charles two weeks ago. The first team All-Southland Conference honoree set a new personal best throw with her toss of 155 feet, 6 inches in winning her sixth individual title of the season.

The two-time Southland Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, Springer takes the 21st best throw in the nation into the event and finished just outside of the top 12 at last year's event.

Scott has been one of the steadiest performers throughout her four-year run at Nicholls, and will look to conclude her career at the East meet with a chance to make it to nationals in her final run. The best throw of her senior year came early in the season at the Louisiana Classics meet hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette in March with a toss of 144-05.

She had six top five finishes and seven total top ten finishes on the season, with her highest finish of the season being second place at the McNeese Cowboy Relays, while also earning two third place finishes at the Sketchers-SFA Alumni Invitational and ULL meet.

A full recap of the event will be posted at GeauxColonels.com following the completion of the day's events this weekend.
