Colonel Thrower Springer Qualifies For NCAA’s

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nicholls State University junior javelin thrower Jaimee Springer will have her historic season continue as the Lloydminster, Alberta native has qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 5-8 after winning her flight of the javelin and finishing eighth overall with a new personal best.

Springer now becomes the second athlete ever at Nicholls to qualify for the national meet, the first since predecessor Leslie Bourgeois did it in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010.

Teammate Aja Scott also competed on Saturday and wrapped up a brilliant career, finishing ninth in the first flight of the javelin throw and finishing 38th overall. Scott became the second ever athlete to qualify for multiple NCAA regional events, making the east round every season as a Colonel.

Participating in the second flight of the three section event and sitting 21st overall in the nation coming into the regional, Springer fouled on her first attempt with two more tries to make the finals in her section. On her next throw, she cleared 152 feet (46.37m) to get three more shots at a berth in the national championships.

Going up against opponents from the likes of Virginia Tech, Kent State, Troy and South Alabama, the Southland Conference champion had the fourth best toss after the first round of throws in the finals clearing 123 feet (37.79m).

But on the very next throw, Springer blew away the competition with a personal and season-best toss of 157 feet, 6 inches (48.01m) which none of the other four competitors would touch on their final two chances as Springer won the flight by exactly four feet over the second place finisher.

Scott's best throw came on her first attempt in the first flight of the competition, using a toss of 138 feet, 3 inches (42.13m) to finish ninth. Although her highest finish at the regional meet came in 2010 by finishing 34th overall, Scott will leave Nicholls with three top 40 regional finishes in her career.

Now Springer will head to the University of Oregon in two weeks to compete for a national championship with the 24 best throwers in the country and become just the fourth Nicholls student- athlete to compete for one to go along with the 1970 Nicholls baseball team who reached the Division II title game and Bourgeois who placed as high as 13th in her senior year.
