EUGENE, Ore. – Nicholls State University junior javelin thrower
Jaimee Springer put a cap on her outstanding junior season on Wednesday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon with a 16th place national finish at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
For her first career national championship event, Springer fared well going up against some of the best throwers in the nation on Wednesday, when compared to predecessor Leslie Bourgeois who finished 22nd overall in her first NCAA meet back in 2009.
Springer and 23 others competitors took the runway for the event, broken up into two flights with the best nine throwers advancing for three more attempts after the first round of competition. The Colonel hurler was placed in the second flight against opponents from Georgia, Stanford and Kansas, among others.
On her first attempt, Springer cleared 143 feet, 5 inches (43.73m) to sit in 11th after the first round of throws with two more chances to make some headway up the leader board.
With her next throw, she showed the form that won her the Southland Conference championship with a mark of 154-02 (47.00m), but ended up falling back two spots to 13th with the rest of the group starting to pull away.
Unfortunately, Springer faulted on her final throw of the opening round ending her competition eighth in the flight but keeping her in the top 16 by the end of the day. In her flight alone, she had the eventual national champion in Georgia's Freya Jones, third place finisher in Brianna Bain from Stanford and sixth place finisher in Heather Bergmann of Kansas.
Now, Springer will be considered for All-American honors with the full list of honorees being released after the completion of the championships this weekend. If she is selected, she will be the first All-American in Nicholls history.
