After picking up a win in the opening weekend, the Nicholls State University softball team will make a trip to Denton, Texas to take part in the Lovelace Invitational hosted by North Texas, starting Friday with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Northern Iowa.

Nicholls (1-4) will also play the host Mean Green (2-3) at 3 p.m. on Friday before a 10 a.m. matchup with Southern (0-2) on Saturday. The Colonels are scheduled for two more contests, a second on Saturday and one on Sunday, with the opponents to be determined.

Nicholls had a bit of a rough start in the Lion Classic last weekend, mainly on offense. The Colonels were shutout three times in the five games, but did score a combined 15 runs in their other two outings. In the only win of the weekend, Nicholls scored nine runs while Hannah Haydel tossed a complete game in the 9-1 mercy rule victory over Alabama State.

Although she came up without a win, freshman Jackie Johnson had a strong Colonel debut, posting a 1.96 ERA in 18-plus innings of work. Johnson fanned 14 batters in her three appearances, but also had double digits in walks as she gave away 16 free passes.

On offense, Brittany Marcet and Brooke Morris led the Colonels with eight hits each in the Lion Classic. After five games, Marcet paces the team with a .500 batting average and four RBIs while Morris crossed the plate a team-high four times and was the only Colonel to record a triple.

Following the Lovelace Invitational, Nicholls will make its 2014 home debut Wednesday, Feb. 19 against Southern. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.
