DENTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team picked up its second win of the season with a 4-0 shutout against Southern, but Northern Iowa needed only five innings in the second game of the Colonels' doubleheader to defeat Nicholls 8-0 in Saturday's action in the Lovelace Invitational.

Nicholls (2-7) will wrap up play on Sunday with a 9 a.m. matchup against Southern (0-5).

Game 1 –Nicholls 4, Southern 0

After scoring two runs off errors in the first against Southern, Nicholls got a two-run single by Taylor Terrio in the fourth and it was more than enough offense as Taylor Hastings and Katie Moulder tossed a combined shutout to lead the Colonels to a 4-0 victory over Southern in the Lovelace Invitational.

In her first career start, Hastings struck out seven batters in just four innings and limited Southern to just two hits. The Lady Jaguars put runners on base in each frame, but Hastings ended three of the four innings with strikeouts.

Katie Moulder picked up the three-inning save, surrendering just two hits while fanning two. The Colonels walked eight batters in the game, but no runs came across the plate.

Nicholls had six hits in the win, getting singles from Danielle Phillips and Camille Rozas while Brittany Marcet and Haley Stevenson each had a double.

Southern had three errors in the first inning, giving Nicholls an early 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Stevenson led off with a double, followed by Rozas' base hit. With two outs, Terrio laced a bases-loaded single to left, bringing home two to double the Colonels' lead.

Game 2 – Northern Iowa 8, Nicholls 0 (5 innings)

After a thrilling extra innings matchup with Northern Iowa (6-2) on Friday, the teams squared off for a second time in as many days, but this time the Lady Panthers cut the game short as NIU used a six-run first inning to defeat the Colonels 8-0 in five innings.

The Colonels recorded four singles in the loss, getting one each from Stevenson, Brooke Morris, Laura Neil and Morgan Wilson.

Freshman Jackie Johnson lasted just 0.2 innings, giving up six runs on five hits. However, only one was earned as Nicholls had two errors in the first.
The Lady Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff homer. The rest of the inning was fueled by three RBI singles, and a two-run error by Rozas.

In the third, Northern Iowa recorded three hits off Hannah Haydel, adding two more runs to put the mercy-rule in effect. Haydel pitched 3.1 innings of relief and struck out three.

In the Colonels' final two at-bats, the offense could only generate one base hit as Northern Iowa gave Nicholls its fifth shutout of the season.
