Final Stats 2 GULFPORT, Miss. – The Nicholls State University softball team's offensive struggles continued as the Colonels squandered outstanding performances in the circle, falling to Chattanooga 1-0 before being one-hit by No. 14 South Alabama in a 2-1 loss on Friday in the Gulfport Classic.
Nicholls will resume play in the classic on Saturday against Mississippi State (3 p.m.) and Memphis (6 p.m.).
Game 1 – Chattanooga 1, Nicholls 0
A sacrifice fly in the first inning for the Mocs proved to be enough as the Colonels had only two hits in a 1-0 loss in their first game of the Gulfport Classic.
Jackie Johnson (3-7) took the loss, giving up one earned on three hits in six innings. Her counterpart, Taylor Deason, pitched a shutout and struck out six.
The Colonels' two hits came on infield singles by
Taylor Terrio and
Brooke Morris. Terrio led the game off with a hit, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Morris' single came with one out in the third, and Deason tossed a perfect game the rest of the way.
Game 2 – No. 14 South Alabama 2, Nicholls 1
Sophomore
Hannah Haydel limited No. 14 South Alabama to eight hits and struck out five, but South Alabama's Hannah Campbell allowed only one hit and an unearned run to lead USA to a 2-1 victory.
Brittany Marcet had the lone hit for Nicholls in the first inning, which led to a run that tied the game at 1-1. After the error by the shortstop, Campbell did not allow a baserunner for the rest of the game.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the fourth, USA tagged Haydel for three hits to take a 2-1 lead. It proved to be enough for Campbell, who struck out nine batters with seven looking, to hand Nicholls its fourth consecutive loss.
