Colonels Fall to Buffalo, 1-0

Final Stats HAMMOND, La. – For the third time this weekend, the Nicholls State University softball team was unable to crack the scoring column, squandering another strong outing in the circle by freshman Jackie Johnson as the Colonels dropped a 1-0 decision in their finale in the Lion Classic on Sunday.

Nicholls (1-4) had only four hits in the loss to Buffalo, which went undefeated in the classic at 6-0, while Johnson gave up four hits in five innings-plus in the circle. The loss dropped Johnson's record to 0-3 for the weekend despite a 1.93 ERA and a sub-.200 opponent batting average. The freshman from Belle Chasse, La., issued 16 walks in three starts, including three on Sunday, but the Colonels failed to score a single run in all three decisions.

The Colonels had four singles against Buffalo, but none came in the same inning. Brooke Morris had a one-out base knock in the first, and Haley Stevenson singled with two outs in the second.

Still scoreless in the bottom of the third, Buffalo took advantage of a leadoff walk to score the game's only run. A double put runners in scoring position before the next batter laced an RBI single. Johnson would retire the next three to limit the damage.

Brittany Marcet extended her hitting streak to five games with a two-out single in the fourth, but Nicholls came up empty once again.

In the sixth, things looked promising as Camille Rozas started the frame with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt, Buffalo ended the threat with two fly outs. The Colonels were then retired in order in the seventh to preserve the shutout.

Nicholls will return to action next weekend in Denton, Texas in the Lovelace Invitational, starting with games on Feb. 14 against Northern Iowa and North Texas.
