Final Stats 2 GULFPORT, Miss – The Nicholls softball team saw its losing streak extend to six games after Day 2 in the Gulfport Classic as the Colonels were shutout 6-0 against Mississippi State before falling to Memphis 8-2 in the night cap.
The Colonels (5-15) will wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a 9:30 matchup against former conference-foe Texas State.
Game 1 – Mississippi State 7, Nicholls 0
Nicholls was held to just one hit for the second straight game as Mississippi State blanked the Colonels 7-0 on Saturday.
Haley Stevenson had Nicholls' only hit in the loss, coming on a single up the middle in the second. The Colonels loaded the bases in the frame after
Camille Rozas and
Cari Spain walked, but a foul out to short kept the Colonels off the board.
Freshman
Jackie Johnson (3-8) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned on five hits and struck out three. Johnson issued eight free passes, walking six while hitting two. Senior
Katie Moulder pitched 2.1 hitless innings out of the pen and also hit two batters.
Logan Foulks led MSU at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Jacey Punches earned the win, tossing all seven innings with six strikeouts.
Game 2 – Memphis 8, Nicholls 2
The Colonels were able to cut a four-run deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth, but Memphis put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Nicholls 8-2.
Hannah Haydel (1-5) kept Memphis off the board through four innings, but the Tigers scored four runs in the fifth on five hits, chasing Haydel after 4.2 innings of work. Haydel struck out five on the night while giving up six hits.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Nicholls took advantage of three Tiger errors to plate two runs.
Brooke Morris drove in
Kayla Prater and
Cari Spain on a base hit to left, making the score at 4-2.
In the seventh, Memphis put any hopes of a comeback on ice by tagging freshman
Taylor Hastings for four runs on four hits.
Taylor Terrio managed to single in the seventh before Ellen Roberts finished her complete game on a Morris groundout.
