Colonels to Host LSU on Wednesday Night

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team will welcome the LSU Tigers for a Wednesday night contest at the Colonel Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Nicholls will be looking to snap a six-game losing streak after being swept in its rain-shortened two-game series against Lamar. Game one against the Lady Cardinals was a 3-1 pitchers' duel, but game two turned out to be a one-sided slugfest as Lamar used a pair of three-run home runs to score 11 runs in one inning. The Colonels went on to lose 12-3 in five innings, keeping the team winless in five Southland games.

While the defense has been solid during the losing streak with only four errors, the team is batting only .193 with four extra base hits, while the pitching staff is posting a 5.06 ERA. Nicholls has been outscored 27-7, but four of the losses were by only two runs.

Despite having two hits in the last six games, senior Brittany Marcet leads the team with a .333 batting average. Marcet is the lone Colonel with double-figure RBIs (18) and has four of the Colonels' nine home runs. Colleen Levy is 5-for-13 at the plate in the Colonels' last six games, raising her average to .321.

In the circle, freshman Jackie Johnson has been tagged with four of the losses during the current skid, but is holding teams to a respectable .250 batting average. On the year, Johnson is 6-12 with a team-best 2.56 ERA and 85 strikeouts.

LSU (18-10) is also coming into the matchup in a bit of a funk, dropping four of its last five – all in Southeastern Conference play. However, two of the losses came against No. 1 Florida including a 10-2 mercy-rule loss in the Tigers' last outing, which was their first rule-rule loss of the season.

A.J. Andrews leads the team at the plate, hitting a shade under .400 on the year at .398. Sahvanna Jaquish is one of three Tigers with 20-plus RBIs, leading the squad with 27.

The Tigers' two main starters in the circle have been Baylee Corbello (8-3, 1.63 ERA) and Ashley Czechner (6-5, 3.70). Corbello has fanned 81 batters in 77-plus innings of work and has a .170 opponent batting average. Kelsee Selman could also see time in the circle, coming into the game with a 4-2 record and a 2.42 ERA.

Following Wednesday's matchup with LSU, Nicholls hits the road for a three-game series at Sam Houston State. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
