Hannah Haydel suffered the loss Wednesday against LSU
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – A lone single by freshman
Taylor Terrio was all the offense the Colonels received against LSU starting pitcher Baylee Corbello and the Tigers pieced together two big innings at the plate as the Nicholls State University softball team suffered its second consecutive mercy-rule loss at home, falling 9-0 to LSU in five innings Wednesday night at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Nicholls has lost its last seven contests, dropping to 8-22 on the year. With the win, LSU improves to 19-10.
Hannah Haydel (1-8) tossed all five innings for the Red and Gray, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits. The Tigers tagged Haydel for four runs in the second, and five runs in the fifth.
After a scoreless first, LSU racked up four hits in the second to take a 4-0 lead. AJ Andrews highlighted the frame with a bases loaded two-run double.
In the bottom of the fourth, Terrio ripped a shot to right field to break up Corbello's no-hitter. Cobello ended the inning with her eighth strikeout of the game.
LSU put the run-rule into play in the top half of the fifth; using three hits to plate five runs. Constance Quinn drove in two on a single up the gut, and Andrews capped the inning with a run-scoring sac-fly.
With the Colonels needing two runs to stay alive, Corbello struck out
Brooke Morris with two outs, but the freshman reached base on a wild pitch. It then allowed Corbello to pick up the rare four-strikeout inning as she got
Cari Spain on a swinging strikeout to end the game.
Along with Andrews, LSU was led by Bailey Landry and Allison Falcon with two hits each.
Nicholls will hit the road for their next series, taking on Sam Houston this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
