Haley Parkerson had two hits Sunday
Final Stats GULFPORT, Miss. – The Nicholls State University softball team closed out play in the Gulfport Classic on a high note with a 6-2 win over former Southland rival Texas State on Sunday morning.
With the win, Nicholls improves to 6-15 on the year and snaps its six-game skid.
The Colonels pounded out 13 hits against the Bobcats (13-7), getting multiple hits by five different players.
Cari Spain was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while
Brooke Morris,
Taylor Terrio,
Danielle Phillips and
Haley Parkerson had two hits each.
Jackie Johnson (4-8) tossed a complete game for the Colonels, giving up one earned run on seven hits. Johnson struck out four while walking two.
The Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the second after an RBI single by
Kayla Prater. Nicholls had four hits in the inning, but left the bases loaded.
Nicholls broke open the game with four hits in the fourth, and also took advantage of two Bobcat errors. Two runs came on the errors, and Parkerson scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, Nicholls scored two runs on two hits. Spain's two RBIs came on a single to left center to give the Colonels a 6-1 lead.
Johnson allowed an unearned run in the seventh before getting a bases loaded line-out to left.
Nicholls will return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Jackson State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
