Final Stats 2 HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team's offensive struggles continued as the Colonels were held without a run in Saturday's doubleheader sweep at Sam Houston State, falling to the Bearkats 6-0 and 2-0.
Nicholls (8-24, 0-7) and Sam Houston (14-13, 4-4) will wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
In game one,
Jackie Johnson (6-13) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in six innings in the circle. The freshman struck out seven and walked four.
Sam Houston had a 2-0 lead over Nicholls after four innings before Hillary Adams hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 advantage. The Bearkats added one more run in the sixth before Shelby Lancaster retired the Colonels in order for the shutout.
In the nightcap,
Hannah Haydel allowed only one earned run in six innings, but the Colonel offense was limited to three hits, with two from freshman Taylor Terrior, as Sam Houston completed the sweep.
Terrior singled in the first and sixth innings, but the Colonels' best chance to crack the scoreboard came in the fourth with the squad down 1-0.
Danielle Phillips recorded a one-out double, and
Colleen Levy drew a two-out walk to put two runners on. But Meme Quinn (3-2) got a groundout to first to end the inning.
With a 2-0 lead heading into the Colonels' final at-bat, Quinn sat down the Colonels in order to preserve the victory.
Despite receiving the loss, Haydel (1-9) had a strong outing, allowing just four hits on the day. Haydel struck out two and walked none.
