The Colonels look to extend their two-game winning streak this weekend at UIW
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team will conclude its seven-game road swing with a three-game Southland Conference series at Incarnate Word, starting Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday's single-game finale is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Nicholls (10-24, 1-7) has won its last two contests and will be looking to match its longest winning streak of the season at three games. The Colonels won their series finale at Sam Houston last Sunday, 8-3, before defeating Southern on Wednesday for fourth time this season.
Taylor Terrio hit .417 last week and leads the Colonels with a .327 average on the year. Terrio has hit safely in 12 of the Colonels' last 15 games which includes six multi-hit outings. On the year, she paces the team with 10 games of two or more hits, and she is also tied with
Danielle Phillips for the team lead in batting average in conference play as each are hitting .333.
Freshman
Jackie Johnson and sophomore
Hannah Haydel both picked up wins in the circle in the Colonels' last two outings. Johnson notched her team-best seventh victory after tossing a complete game with six strikeouts at Sam Houston while Haydel pitched 4.1 innings in the win at Southern.
Incarnate Word (13-16, 2-1) heads into the matchup after winning their first ever Southland series, but the Cardinals lost the finale to Abilene Christian in a 3-0 shutout. The Cardinals and Colonels have no common opponents so far this season as UIW has played mostly non Division-I opponents.
UIW is batting .293 as a team, led by Whitney Waltrip with a sparkling .405 average. In 22 games played, she has two homers, one double and 13 RBIs. In the circle, the Cardinals have a collective 4.90 earned run average, headed by Mikaela Flores with a 2.87 mark and a perfect 5-0 record. Flores has struck out 43 batters in 39 innings.
