Colonels Take Twin-Bill against Jackson State

Final Stats 1 | Final Stats 2 JACKSON, Miss – The Nicholls State University softball team picked up a sweep over Jackson State at the JSU Softball Complex, winning Game 1 6-4 in eight innings before notching its third consecutive victory with a 7-3 win in the night cap Wednesday.

Nicholls (8-15) will open up conference play this weekend in Nacogdoches as the Colonels take on Stephen F. Austin for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Game 1 – Nicholls 6, Jackson State 4 (8 inn.)

Down 2-0 after four innings, Nicholls scored two runs in the next two frames to take a 4-3 lead and the Colonels would go on to win in eight innings, 6-4.

Freshman Taylor Terrio had three hits for the Colonels and finished the day with six. Brittany Marcet and Brooke Morris added two each as Nicholls finished with 10 in the game.

Jackie Johnson picked up the win after 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Sophomore Hannah Haydel got the no decision, tossing 6.1 innings with two earned runs on five hits. Haydel struck out three but walked five.

After Jackson State (5-16) put two on the board, Marcet drove in the Colonels' first run with a double to right in the fifth, plating Morris who had a leadoff single. Terrio, who also singled in the inning, came home on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Phillips to even the score at 2-2.

After the Lady Tigers scored on an unearned run in the fifth, Nicholls took the lead in the sixth after RBI singles by Terrio and Marcet. But JSU used two hits in the seventh to send the game into extras.

In the eight, Marcet was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in the game-winning run. Johnson walked the leadoff batter in the bottom half, but retired the next three in order.

Game 2 – Nicholls 7, Jackson State 3

The Colonels jumped out to a seven-run lead after four innings and went on sweep JSU with a 7-3 victory in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Nicholls went up 3-0 after the first, scoring all three without having a hit in the inning. The Lady Tigers had two errors in the inning, put Jackson State in an early hole.

The Colonels then pieced together three hits for another three runs in the second, highlighted by a 2-run double by Phillips. Earlier in the inning, Terrio drove in Kayla Prater, who reached on a leadoff error.

Leading 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Nicholls gave up two runs to make things interesting, but Johnson stranded two runners on base, ending the game with a strikeout.

Johnson struck out eight in seven innings of work, allowing one earned on six hits. Taylor Hastings made a brief appearance in the seventh, allowing two unearned runs on one hit.
