Final Stats 2 NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin used a pair of three-run home runs to sweep the Nicholls State University softball team in the Colonels' conference opening doubleheader Saturday at the SFA Softball Field.
Nicholls (8-17, 0-2) dropped game one 4-1 before the Ladyjacks (10-12, 2-0) had a late homer in game two for a 4-2 win.
The Colonels and Ladyjacks will wrap up the three-game set on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1 – SFA 4, Nicholls 1
The Colonels had eight hits but left 10 runners stranded and a three-run shot by SFA's Shalie Day in the fourth was more than enough runs as the Ladyjacks snapped Nicholls' three-game winning streak with a 4-1 win in game one.
Brooke Morris and
Haley Parkerson led Nicholls with two hits each, while
Jackie Johnson (6-9) suffered the loss in six innings of work. Johnson allowed four runs on six hits, walked five and struck out three.
Nicholls took a 1-0 lead in the second after a double steal by
Danielle Phillips, who had a leadoff single, and Parkerson. The Colonels threatened again in the fourth after leadoff hits by
Haley Stevenson and Phillips, but SFA struck out the next three batters.
In the bottom half with two on, Day sent a ball over the left field wall for a 3-1 lead. After an added insurance run in the sixth by SFA, the Colonels loaded the bases with two down in their final at-bat, but Stevenson grounded out to first to end the game.
Game 2 – SFA 4, Nicholls 2
The Colonels led 2-1 after five and a half innings, but a three-run homer in the bottom gave SFA a 4-2 victory for the doubleheader sweep.
Hannah Haydel (1-6) took the loss, giving up three earned on just three hits in six innings. Two of the hits came in the sixth, setting up Elizabeth Arana's three-run jack. Haydel finished with five strikeouts and issued four walks.
The Colonels had seven hits, with
Colleen Levy going 3-for-3.
Taylor Terrio drove in both runs on a game-tying RBI single in the third, and her sac-fly in the fifth gave Nicholls a 2-1 lead.
After SFA took the lead, Brittany Lewis gave up just one hit the rest of the way to preserve the win.
