Late Run Leads SLU Past Nicholls, 5-4

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Looking for its first sweep in conference play, the Nicholls State University softball team rallied from a four-run deficit to tie its series finale against Southeastern Louisiana, but the Lady Lions scored a run in the top of the seventh as the Colonels fell 5-4 Sunday at the Colonel Softball Complex.

With the loss, Nicholls drops to 16-28 overall and 6-10 in the Southland. Southeastern improves to 15-21 and 7-11.

Caitlyn Carroll had a career-high three hits while fellow freshman Taylor Terrio was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as she raised her conference batting average to an astounding .519. Haley Parkerson and Brook Morris each had a hit and an RBI as Nicholls had eight hits on the day.

Hannah Haydel (4-12) took the loss for the Colonels, allowed three earned runs on 13 hits in seven innings of work. Haydel struck out four and walked three.

Southeastern took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, scoring its first run on an error. Jessie Brown drove in a run on a sac fly and Lacey Fritz sent a shot up the middle to give SLU a three-run lead.

After SLU added another run in the top of the fourth, the Colonels used four hits in the bottom half to tie the game at 4-all. Brooke Morris started the scoring with an RBI single to left center, and Terrio drove in two with a base hit to center. The next batter, Parkerson, tied the game with a run-scoring double down the right field line.

Neither team would score again until SLU's Brittany Tschoepe highlighted a four-hit seventh by the Lady Lions with a RBI single to left. Nicholls drew a pair of walks in the seventh to make things interesting, but Spencer Adkinson (5-5) forced a two-out flyout to seal the victory for Southeastern.

Katie Lacour led SLU at the plate, going 4-for-5. Adkinson pitched 3.2 of relief, surrendering just two hits.

Nicholls returns to the diamond with a three-game series at McNeese State, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, April 18.
