Nicholls will host Jackson State for a doubleheader Wednesday at the Colonel Softball Complex
THIBODAUX, La. – Coming off a series split over the weekend, the Nicholls State University softball team will continue its longest home stand of the season with a Wednesday doubleheader against Jackson State, scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Colonel Softball Complex.
Live stats and an audio broadcast for the two games will be available on geauxcolonels.com.
Nicholls (13-26) is coming off an extra-innings victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which saw the Colonels rally late from a 5-0 deficit. After being held hitless in her first four at-bats, sophomore
Danielle Phillips gave the Colonels' a 6-5 walk off victory after lining a shot off the pitcher with the bases loaded to drive home the game-winning run. It marked the Colonels' second victory this season when trailing after five innings.
Nicholls had 11 hits in the win, led by three from leadoff hitter
Taylor Terrio. Terrio has been on a rampage at the plate over the last eight games, hitting safely in each contest and has seven multi-hit games for a blistering .625 batting average. The freshman is leading the Colonels with a .384 average, which ranks 11th in the Southland, and is tops in the league with 48 hits.
As a team, the Colonels are batting .264 and including Terrio, have three players batting .300 or better. Designated player
Brittany Marcet has a .302 average and leads the team with 27 RBIs, and
Colleen Levy has a .303 average with five extra-base hits.
Brooke Morris is a shade under at .299 while Phillips rounds out the hitting leaders at .291.
In the circle,
Jackie Johnson leads the team with an 8-13 record and 108 strikeouts, but has not saw action in the last four outings. Despite taking the loss,
Hannah Haydel had a solid outing against the Islanders as she allowed just one earned run in nine innings. Haydel has a 3-10 mark on the year and has 50 strikeouts.
Jackson State (20-23) heads to Thibodaux on a hot streak, winning 15 of its last 16 contests, helped by its current eight-game winning streak. Although the Lady Tigers have been tearing through the SWAC with an 11-0 mark, JSU's winning streak started with a 3-1 win over SEC Arkansas.
JSU is batting .250 on the year, led by Lauren Aikens with a .388 average. Aikens has been a doubles machine, racking up 16 and has a team-best 33 RBIs. Chelsea Smith is second on the team with 29 RBIs and leads the squad with four homers.
Jackson State has primarily used two pitchers, Kelsey Townsend and Breea Jamerson. Townsend has a 9-14 record with a 6.21 ERA while Jamerson is 7-8 with a 4.05 ERA and 57 strikeouts.
The Colonels and Lady Tigers already squared off in a doubleheader earlier this season in Jackson, with Nicholls sweeping the two games. After a 6-4 win in extra innings, Nicholls took game two 7-3.
