Nicholls closes out the season on the road at Central Arkansas
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team will wrap up its 2014 campaign with a three-game series at Central Arkansas, starting Saturday, May 3 with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
Sunday's season finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. Live stats provided by Central Arkansas will be available on geauxcolonels.com.
Nicholls (18-32, 8-14) heads into the final series looking to play the spoiler role as the Colonels were eliminated from postseason contention after Sunday's games. Central Arkansas (22-31, 11-12) enters the weekend trailing Houston Baptist by 0.5 games in the standings for the sixth and final spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Colonels are coming off a series loss to Northwestern State, taking game two of the three-game set. Nicholls had a chance to sweep Saturday's doubleheader, but could not hang on to an early three-run lead.
Heading into the final week of play, the Colonels are batting .285 in conference play, which ranks sixth in the league and is just two points behind Abilene Christian and UCA. Freshman
Taylor Terrio continues to put up impressive numbers for the Red and Gray, posting a conference-best .471 batting average in 21 games. Terrio has hit safely in 18 of her last 20 contests, has an 18-game on-base streak and carries a nine-game hitting streak.
Sophomore second baseman
Danielle Phillips has also played well in conference, ranking 16th in the SLC with a .352 batting average. Phillips drove in the Colonels' only run in their last outing, finishing the day 3-for-4 at the plate.
Colleen Levy is also batting .300 in conference, followed by
Brooke Morris (.292) and
Haley Parkerson (.288).
Hannah Haydel leads the team in conference wins with four, and
Jackie Johnson has three. Haydel earned the victory last weekend against NSU, tossing all seven innings while striking out seven. Haydel has a team-best 3.32 ERA in 11 Southland games, and Johnson posts a 3.74 mark with 41 strikeouts.
The Sugar Bears are led at the plate by Briana Whisenhunt and Sarah Bigej, who rank ninth in 10th, respectively, in batting in the conference at .384 and .382. Sam Forrest is close behind at .367, and Jessie Taylor is tied for third in the SLC with six home runs.
Heading the pitching staff is Kylee Studioso who has a 14-10 record on the year, a 3.61 ERA and 185 strikeouts. Studioso ranks second in conference games with 104 strikeouts, third in opponent batting average at .203 and is fifth in ERA with a 2.16 mark.
Last season, the teams split the rain-shortened two-game series in Thibodaux. After falling 1-0 in game one, Nicholls took the second game, 5-3, behind
Brittany Marcet's late three-run homer.
