Colonels Blanked in Season Finale 8-0

Colonels Blanked in Season Finale 8-0

Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – The Nicholls State University softball team fell behind early to the University of Central Arkansas, and was never able to generate offense, falling 8-0 on Sunday afternoon after five innings.

The Colonels (19-34, 9-16 SLC) split their doubleheader with the Sugar Bears (24-32, 13-13) on Saturday, allowing just four runs combined on the day, but could not keep the Central Arkansas bats at bay on Sunday.

The Sugar Bears took the lead in the first inning on a Briana Whisenhunt single down the leftfield line that scored Sam Forrest.

In the third, an Ashley Boswell single through the left side sent Hayley Parker home.

Central Arkansas added two runs in the fourth. Forrest doubled to left center, scoring Hannah Stirton, before Whisenhunt singled to score Forrest for a second time.

The Sugar Bears opened things up in the fifth inning, scoring four additional runs to "run rule" Nicholls and close out the game.

Hannah Haydel (6-15) took the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits with a strikeout and five walks.

Kylee Studioso (16-11) earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing just two hits while fanning seven batters.

Taylor Terrio went 1-for-3 and Cari Spain was 1-for-2 on the day, registering the only hits for the Colonels.

Sam Forrest had a monster day offensively for Central Arkansas, hitting 3-for-3 while notching an RBI, scoring three times and walking once. Jessie Taylor was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

It was a disappointing end for Nicholls, but with only four upperclassmen (three seniors and one junior), there is a lot to look forward to from a young team with a full year of experience under its belt.
