THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University student-athlete advisory committee has teamed up with the Southland Conference and Delete Blood Cancer to save lives by holding a bone marrow donor registration drive running from Wednesday until Friday of this week.
Interested parties can join the drive at the Donald G. Bollinger Memorial Student Union from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday's registration will take place at Crawfish Day from noon until 3 p.m.
"As part of the Southland Conference initiative, all SAAC organizations are participating in the Delete Blood Cancer movement," Head Soccer Coach
Dylan Harrison said. "It's a great opportunity for our student-athletes to make a difference the Houma-Thibodaux community and beyond."
One hundred percent of the money raised at the event goes directly to registering potential donors and every $65 raised covers the testing and processing expenses of one new person to the registry.
Delete Blood Cancer works to inspire as many people as possible to register as bone marrow donors to provide patients with second chances at life. The organization is achieving that goal by celebrating how donors can save lives, dispelling the myths about the donation process and providing our hospital partners with quality donations in a timely manner.
Delete Blood Cancer began with one family's search for a bone marrow donor. In 1990, Peter Harf and his daughters went door-to-door in an effort to find a donor match for his wife and their mother, Mechtild Harf. They registered 68,000 donors in just one year. Sadly, Mechtild lost her battle, but in her honor, the Harfs started a bone marrow donor center (DKMS) that has since grown to be the world's largest. The organization has branches in the U.S., Germany, the U.K., Poland and Spain. Globally, they have registered over 6 million donors and provided more than 55,000 patients with second chances at life.
