Colonels run-rule Coppin State, 13-0, to close Lion Classic

HAMMOND,  La. – Megan Landry dealt four scoreless innings while Kendal Daniels and Amanda Gianelloni homered as the Nicholls State University softball team earned a mercy rule 13-0 victory over Coppin State Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.

The win put Nicholls at 4-1 for the weekend, matching the Colonels' record in the previous two Lion Classics. Nicholls had wins over Army, Mississippi Valley State and Southern Illinois, with the lone loss coming to Nevada in a 1-0 decision.

Landry picked up her third win in as many starts, striking out five while allowing two hits. She finished the opening weekend with a 0.39 ERA in 18 innings pitched and struck out 18.

Landry was perfect through three before allowing two hits in the fourth. Taylor Hastings pitched the fifth, retiring Coppin State (1-5) in order to close out the game.

The offense cranked out eight hits and scored in each inning, highlighted by four-spots in second and fifth frames. Leading 9-0 after four, the Colonels scored their final runs of the day on a pinch-hit grand slam by Daniels. The homer was the first career hit for the freshman from Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Haley Stevenson was the only Colonel with two hits and added two RBIs. Gianelloni also drove in two, including one on a solo shot in the third. Brooke Morris, Veronica Villafranco, Kimmie Rodriguez and Sydney Bourg each tallied a base hit.

Cloe' Ochoa was the losing pitcher for CSU, allowing six earned on six hits. As a staff, CSU issued five walks on the day.
