MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Nicholls State University junior
Megan Landry tossed her third career no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Albany, and freshman
Jewel Lara had four hits on the day including the game-winner in a 3-2 walk-off victory against Villanova to give the Colonels a sweep on Saturday in the EMU Madeira Beach Tournament.
Nicholls (8-3) will look to finish the weekend with a 4-1 record with a Sunday matchup against Manhattan. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. central.
Game 1 – Nicholls 1, Albany 0
Megan Landry bounced back from her first loss of the season on Friday by tossing her third no-hitter, and
Jewel Lara drove in the game's only run in the first inning as Nicholls defeated Albany, 1-0.
Landry (4-1) struck out just three batters in her first career seven-inning no-hitter, but the defense had only one error in the win. Including the error, Landry allowed three runners to reach – one on a walk and one from a hit-by-pitch. She retired Albany in order five times, including in the last two innings.
Nicholls had just two hits against Devin Durando, who tossed all six innings for Albany, and despite walking eight batters, Lara's two-single in the first produced the game's only run.
Samantha Mracich led off the frame with a walk and stole second before coming around to score.
The other hit for the Colonels was an infield single by
Kelsey Miller.
Game 2 - Nicholls 3, Villanova 2
The Colonels out-hit Villanova, 12-3, but the game was knotted up until
Jewel Lara delivered once again, this time with a walk-off RBI single in the seventh to give Nicholls a 3-2 win over the Wildcats.
Nicholls had three hits in the final frame, started on a double by
Samantha Dares. With one out,
Amanda Gianelloni recorded her fourth hit of the game to move pinch-runner Miller to third. The next batter, Lara, tallied her third hit for the walk-off win.
Alexis LaBure pitched all seven innings for the Colonels, allowing just three hits and struck out four. Villanova scored a run in the third and fourth innings off of LaBure to grab a 2-1 lead.
Nicholls scored its first run in the second on an RBI groundout by
Brooklyn Devine. Two hits led off the inning, highlighted by a
Veronica Villafranco double.
With Nicholls trailing in the fifth, Lara singled home Mracich to tie the game at 2-all. She and Gianelloni were the only Colonels with multi-hit efforts as a total of seven players registered a hit.
