HOUSTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University softball team remained perfect on the road this season as the Colonels swept the series against HBU with a 6-2 win Saturday.
The win put Nicholls at 14-7 overall, 3-0 in the Southland Conference and 8-0 on the road. HBU fell to 2-11 and 0-3.
The Colonels had nine hits in the win, receiving two from
Samantha Mracich and
Kali Clement.
Samantha Dares and
Kasey Frederick both drove in a pair of runs.
Nicholls struck first with a 2-run single by Dares in the second inning and went up 3-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring single from
Jewel Lara. But HBU trimmed the deficit in the bottom half as the Huskies recorded their first hit off of
Megan Landry (9-3). Landry carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but a walk, and a double and an error led to HBU's first run of the day.
The Huskies then made it 3-2 after Demi Janak homered to lead off the sixth. Landry left the game, closing out her day with 5.0 innings of work, three strikeouts, and three walks.
Alexis LaBure pitched the rest of the sixth, retiring HBU in order.
Nicholls added three insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by a 2-run single by Frederick. The first run scored earlier in the inning on HBU's second error of the game.
In the bottom half, LaBure sat down the first two batters before allowing a single. She ended the game with a strikeout, earning her third save as Nicholls picked up the sweep.
