HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team left the bases loaded in the seventh in a 3-2 loss to Southeastern Louisiana, but behind outstanding pitching by
Amanda Holliday and
Alexis LaBure in the second game, Nicholls avoided the sweep with a 2-0 victory Saturday at North Oak Park.
With the split, the Colonels stand at 20-9 on the season and 7-2 in the Southland. Southeastern wrapped up the weekend at 19-12 overall, 6-3 in conference and saw its seven-game winning streak snapped.
The Colonels outhit the Lady Lions in all three games of the series, but like in Friday's loss, errors turned out to be the difference in their second loss of the weekend. Southeastern scored three runs in the third, including one unearned, before Nicholls scored in the fourth on a solo home run by
Kasey Frederick. But the Colonels could only muster a single run in the seventh after loading the bases with no outs.
Nicholls put three on with singles by
Brooklyn Devine,
Kelsey Miller, and
Jewel Lara.
Amanda Gianelloni then drew a walk to make it 3-2, and Rachel Hayes took over in the circle for SLU. She forced a grounder by
Kali Clement, and SLU nearly turned a double play, going home to first. With the bags still full, Hayes got Frederick and
Samantha Dares to pop out on the left side to end the game.
Megan Landry (12-5) suffered her second loss of the weekend, allowing two earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. SLU used three hits and two errors in the third to plate all three runs.
Yasmeen Williams doubled twice for the Colonels, while Devine finished with two singles.
In the second game, the Colonels broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with the help of a leadoff SLU error. Williams followed with a single, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Lara placed a perfect bunt down to third for a single and a 1-0 lead.
Gretchen Morgan followed with a groundout, allowing pinch-runner Mallory Marino to come home.
Holliday (3-1) allowed just two hits through five innings before giving up a leadoff single in the sixth. LaBure made her second appearance of the day and picked up her fourth save of the year after recording six straight outs.
The teams combined for just seven hits, with Miller and Devine adding singles. Miller's leadoff single to start the game extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Alley McDonald (1-3) went the distance for SLU, striking out four.
