Colonels remain in second with split against UCA

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team stayed in a tie for second place with Central Arkansas as each squad took a game in Friday's doubleheader at Swanner Field.

Nicholls (22-10, 8-3 SLC) won the first game behind another excellent outing by Megan Landry, while Kali Clement drove in the game-winning runs on a double, her second of the game, in the sixth for a 2-1 victory. But in the second game, early errors allowed Central Arkansas (17-14, 8-3 SLC) to jump out to a 2-0 lead before going on to win, 4-1.

Landry (13-5) tossed all seven innings in the opener, striking out three while allowing four hits. Three of the hits came in the fourth where UCA grabbed a 1-0 lead.

The Bears tagged Landry with a leadoff single in the fourth, and Kaylyn Shepard followed with a double, but Landry received some help from the defense to save a run. On the play, Kate Myers got the green light to try to score from first, but shortstop Amanda Gianelloni fired a strike home to keep the game scoreless. But the Bears scored on a double from Ryan McTaggert and loaded the bases before Landry got a swinging strikeout to keep the deficit at 1-0.

In the sixth, Clement came to the plate with two on and two out against Rachel Haberman (3-1). She then sent a 2-1 offering into the left-center gap, allowing pinch runner Corynn Major and Gianelloni to cross the plate.

With a 2-1 lead in the seventh, Landry retired the Bears in order for the series-opening win.

For game two, a passed ball allowed a run to score in the first and pitcher Alexis LaBure (5-4) mishandled a grounder in the second to put Nicholls in a 2-0 hole.

GIanelloni put Nicholls on the board with a two-out single in the third, scoring Kelsey Miller who walked. Miller singled in the opening game but saw her hitting streak end at 11 games after going 0-for-3.

UCA got the run back in the fourth, but it was another Colonel error that resulted in the 3-1 deficit. The Bears scored the final run of the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Myers.

The combination of Kailla Searcy and Rio Sanchez held Nicholls to four hits, with Jewel Lara recording three of them.

LaBure struck out seven in 7.0 innings of work, scattering seven hits. Sanchez picked up the save for UCA after tossing 3.2 innings of hitless relief.
