10-run fifth lifts Colonels to series sweep against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Trailing by a run in the fifth inning, the Nicholls State University softball team pounded out nine hits for a 10-run frame as the Colonels earned their second straight Southland Conference series sweep with a 10-1 run-rule victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at Chapman Field.

With the win, the Colonels (35-13, 18-6 SLC) move into sole possession of first place with three games remaining in the regular season. Nicholls closes out the year next weekend at home against Lamar.

Freshman Corynn Major paced the offense with a 3-for-3 game and scored the tying run in the fifth. Classmate Kelsey Miller, who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, drove Major in with a triple before Jewel Lara put Nicholls ahead with an RBI single.

Megan Landry (20-7) earned the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in 4.0 innings. She had a hit-by-pitch in the second and the Islanders capitalized with a run-scoring double by Whitney Wendel. The run ended the pitching staff's scoreless streak at 27 innings, but it would be the only run for the Islanders as Landry became just the second 20-game winner for the program since 1998.

In the decisive inning, Kasey Frederick doubled after Lara's hit and Moriah Strother was walked to load the bases with no outs. With the Colonels leading 3-1, Alexis Tovar came into pitch and got back-to-back strikeouts. But senior Julia Bailey kept the inning going with a pinch-hit RBI single as the Colonels scored seven runs with two outs.

Major made it 6-1 with an infield single, and another run scored on the play on a wild throw to first. Miller followed with a 2-run single and Frederick ended the big inning with a run-scoring single to center.

Alexis LaBure pitched the final frame, walking the leadoff hitter before retiring the next three.

Ashley Smith (3-20) took the loss for the Islanders, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.
