ABILENE, Texas – Kali Clement and
Caitlin Garcia hit a pair of home runs to lead the Nicholls State University softball team to a Friday sweep against Abilene Christian with 12-4 and 5-4 victories.
Clement had a total of five RBIs on the day and sent two out of the park in the opening win. Garcia hit two in the second contest, including a much needed 2-run shot in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. ACU rallied late before
Emily Danehower (1-0) re-entered the game and left the bases loaded to preserve the victory.
Danehower scattered nine hits with four earned runs and struck out one. She pitched 6.1 innings in the start but came back in with the bases loaded and a 5-3 advantage in the seventh. Danehower walked a run in but ended the game on a groundout.
Garcia was 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in three.
Samantha Dares had two hits and Nicholls totaled 11 in the win.
Megan Landry was the winner in game one, tossing 6.1 innings with three earned runs on eight hits. She allowed three runs in the first two innings before settling in to improve to 11-5 on the year.
The Colonels had five homers in the opener, with
Amanda Gianelloni,
Kennedy Hebert and Dares joining Clement. Hebert and Clement had 3-run shots in the Colonel third to fuel a seven-run frame.
Dares and Clement went back-to-back in the sixth for a 10-3 advantage, and Gianelloni capped the scoring with a 2-run homer in the seventh.
ON DECK
Nicholls and Abilene Christian will wrap up the series Saturday at 12 p.m.
