Colonels earn Friday split against Sam Houston State

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team bounced back from a 3-2 loss in the series opener against Sam Houston State to take the second game of the doubleheader, 1-0, Friday at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Megan Landry (13-7) threw all 14 innings for the Colonels and tossed a 1-hit shutout in the nightcap. Kali Clement's RBI double in the first inning would be all Landry needed for the victory. Amanda Gianelloni scored on the play after walking to leadoff the frame.

Sam Houston's lone hit was in the first inning as Tiffany Thompson reached on a bunt single. Landry, who had two strikeouts in the game, issued just two walks the rest of the way and retired the final 12 batters that she faced.

Emma Holland, Melise Gossen, and Kasey Frederick each had hits against Regan Dunn, who pitched all seven innings for Sam Houston State (15-18, 7-4 SLC).

In game one, Nicholls had runners on second and third with no outs but was unable to bring home the tying run in the 3-2 loss.

Nicholls (16-15, 6-2 SLC) had six hits against Bearkat ace Lindsey McLeod, but she struck out 11 Colonels. Two punchouts came in the final inning before she fielded a grounder and tossed to first to end the game.

Gossen was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener, while Holland and Samantha Dare each had solo home runs. Dares' came in the first inning and Holland belted hers in the third to tie the game at 2-2.

Sam Houston grabbed the lead for good in the fifth on a two-out single to left by Thompson.

Landry struck out five in 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.

ON DECK
Nicholls and Sam Houston finish the series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
