Colonels take series at HBU with 4-3 victory

HOUSTON, Texas - Helped by a 2-run home run by Samantha Dares, the Nicholls State University softball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings against HBU and the Colonels hung on for a 4-3 victory Saturday to clinch their opening Southland Conference series.

Jordan Moon (6-4) pitched all seven innings for her second win of the weekend, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and struck out two. Her final strikeout was a big one as HBU (12-10, 1-2 SLC) had the tying run on base before Moon fanned Amber Lotz to end the game.

Nicholls (12-14, 2-1 SLC) tallied 10 hits in the win, led by Dares who was 2-for-3 including her second-inning homer. Corynn Major went 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Melise Gossen was 2-for-4.

Major scored in the first inning on an error, then Caitlin Garcia made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. In the second, Major singled and scored again as Dares hit her fourth homer of the season.

Moon cruised through four innings before HBU scored on a 2-run shot by Jasie Roberts. The Huskies then pulled within one when Caitlyn Brockway hit a solo homer to lead off the seventh.

Moon retired the next batter before allowing a single. Following an infield popup, Moon closed out the series with her 50th strikeout of the year.
