Colonels blanked in series finale against Northwestern State

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team could only muster two hits in the series finale against Northwestern State as the Colonels were swept at home for the first time since 2011 with a 4-0 loss Saturday at Swanner Field.

Both hits for the Colonels (6-8, 0-3 SLC) were singles, with the first coming in the fourth inning via a leadoff infield base hit by Kelsey Miller. The other was a one-out hit by Corynn Major in the sixth.

Northwestern State (8-6, 3-0 SLC) received a strong outing in the circle by EC Delafield, who struck out six in the complete game shutout. Her counterpart, Alexis LaBure, suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 2.0 innings.

Delafield was also responsible for two of the Lady Demon RBIs, driving in the first in the opening inning with a double. After NSU took a 2-0 lead earlier in the second, Delafield added one more RBI on a groundout. The final run came on an Alexi Perry single to right in the fifth.

Miller and Major were the only Colonels to reach base in the loss. After Miller led off the fourth with her hit, Delafield got a strikeout and a pair of popouts. In the sixth, Major was retired on a fielder's choice for the second out before Bree Aguillard flew out to end the inning.

The Colonels were retired in order in the seventh.

With her single, Miller extended her hitting streak to five games. Kennedy Hebert went 0-for-2 to see her eight-game streak come to an end.
