LAFAYETTE, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team had three hits and scored in the opening frame at No. 19 Louisiana, but the Ragin' Cajuns went on to win their 10th straight in the series against the Colonels with a 10-2 run-rule victory Tuesday night at Lamson Park.
Nicholls (1-4) struck first with an RBI double by
Alexa Poche' before Louisiana scored the game's next eight runs. The Colonels plated another in the fifth thanks to a
Syndee Shelton base hit up the middle, but UL (6-0) ended the game in the bottom half with a Maddie Hayden 2-run single.
The Colonels totaled five hits in the loss and were the first team to score on UL this season as the Ragin' Cajuns won their previous five games by a margin of 46-0.
Melise Gossen and
Lulu Vazquez had singles in the first to set up the run-scoring Poche' double.
Julia Kramer tallied a leadoff single in the fifth which resulted in Shelton's RBI single.

Taryn Westbrook finished the game with 1.1 innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out one.
After jumping out to the early lead, Nicholls got into a jam in the first as UL used three infield singles and a passed ball to go up 2-1. With one out,
Kennedy Hebert prevented an even bigger inning from happening, diving to rob a base hit in shallow right center and then firing to first for double play.
But UL's Sam Landry (3-0) went on to retire seven straight Colonels while the Cajun offense extended the advantage to 7-1 through three innings. A Stormy Kotzelnick triple brought in two in the second and Alexa Langeliers homered in the third for the six-run lead.
UL tacked a run on in the fourth, but the Colonels answered with Shelton's RBI base hit. Then in the bottom of the fith, a walk and a double set up Hayden's walk-off single to make the final.
Landry gave up the three first-inning hits and walked Vazquez in the fourth. She finished the night with six strikeouts.
